News -> Turkish presidential election, 2014 2014-08-10
The first round of the Presidential elections will be held in Turkey on 10 August 2014,directly for the first time. If no candidate achieves a simple majority, a second round will be held on August 24
The Law on Presidential Elections accepted and put into effect on 20 January 2012 decided that presidential elections will be held in 2014 instead of 2012; within 60 days before the end of the seven-year term of incumbent President of Turkey Abdullah Gül, who will be the last indirectly electedPresident of Turkey. As Gül took office on August 28, 2007, the first possible day could be June 29, but a date between August 10 and August 17 is considered more reasonable.
It is decided in the same law that former Presidents Kenan Evren, Süleyman Demirel, Ahmet Necdet Sezer and incumbent Abdullah Gül cannot be nominated for a second term. Also, the Prime Minister of Turkey can be nominated for the presidency without having to resign from his post, although the former provision has been taken to the Constitutional Court.
The presidential elections campaign will be held in an "American manner", where candidates can accept personal donations for their campaigns; however, one person cannot donate more than 8,259 TL (approximately $4,500 USD) to a campaign.
